Quick answer: if you still have your seed phrase, you can recover full access to your wallet and every NFT in it on any new device, in minutes. If the seed phrase is gone too, there is no support line, no password reset, and no way back in. The assets remain on the blockchain, permanently visible but permanently out of reach.
Why NFT wallets don’t have a recovery option
A traditional online account can be recovered because a company controls the database and can verify your identity through email, ID, or support tickets. A crypto wallet has none of that. Nobody, not MetaMask, not the marketplace, not Ethereum itself, keeps a backup of your private key. The seed phrase is the only backup that exists, and it exists only where you wrote it down.
The scenarios that actually happen
Phone or laptop lost, stolen, or broken. This is recoverable. Reinstall the wallet app on a new device, choose “Import wallet,” and enter your seed phrase. Every asset reappears exactly as it was, since the assets were never stored on the old device to begin with, only the keys to access them were.
Forgot the app password but still have the seed phrase. Also recoverable, same process: reinstall and import using the seed phrase. The password only ever protected local access on that one device.
Seed phrase itself is lost, along with the only device that had the wallet unlocked. Not recoverable. This is the outcome every seed phrase warning is trying to prevent.
Seed phrase was stored digitally and got stolen (screenshot synced to a hacked cloud account, phishing site, malware). Also not recoverable, but in a worse way: the thief now has full access and can move everything out before you even realize it happened.
What to do the moment you realize you lost access
If you still have the seed phrase written down somewhere, stop searching for other solutions and just import it into a fresh wallet install. There’s no urgency once you have the phrase; the assets aren’t going anywhere on their own.
If the seed phrase is genuinely gone and you have no backup, there’s realistically nothing to try. Be skeptical of any service that claims it can recover a lost seed phrase or “unlock” a wallet for a fee. These are near-universally scams targeting people in exactly this situation, since a real seed phrase is mathematically required and no third party has a workaround.
Preventing this before it happens
- Store the seed phrase on paper (or a fireproof metal backup for larger holdings), not digitally in any form.
- Keep a second copy in a separate physical location, in case of fire, flood, or theft at the first location.
- Never enter a seed phrase into a website, even one that looks like MetaMask’s own site. MetaMask, and every legitimate wallet provider, never asks for it after initial setup.

The uncomfortable truth about self-custody
This level of personal responsibility is the tradeoff for not needing anyone’s permission to hold or move your own assets. There’s no bank to call, which is also why there’s no bank to bail you out. Treat the seed phrase with the same seriousness as the total value of everything it protects, because that’s exactly what it is.
